Ralph Rawlinson's Railway Roundup

London Underground - Jubilee Line Upgrade
The new signalling system was used to control trains in passenger service
for the first time over the weekend of 14/15 August.  Services were
operated between Stratford and Waterloo in the first of a series of
trials. LUL hope to have the final stage completed by the end of 2010.

Watford-St Albans
Hertfordshire County Council's plans to convert the six-mile Watford-St
Albans branch to light rail operation has taken a step forward.  They are
seeking expressions of interest from firms to design, construct and
operate the new Abbey Line system.

Stafford
It has long been acknowledged that the existing layout at Stafford is too
restrictive and leads to bottlenecks as trains wait for paths to cross
over to Stoke or Wolverhampton.  One solution would be a flyover at Norton
Bridge but Network Rail will consider all options once it has notified all
concerned.  At one stage a fly-under south of the station was proposed as
being cheaper than a major resignalling and track remodelling project.

Woodhead Route
A report sponsored by Don Valley Railway Ltd, Sheffield City Council and
South Yorkshire PTE concludes that the freight-only line between Sheffield
and Stocksbridge could be reopened for passengers for as little as 4.3m.

Swansea
The first contract under the scheme to revamp Swansea station (reported in
Raildate in March) has been awarded to the Strategic Team Group (STG).
They have been tasked with building a larger concourse, renovating the
station front, adding an entrance and refurbishing the platform canopies.

Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway
The railway has started work on its Big Pit branch and by September, a
base was being prepared for the Big Pit Halt.  This 650yd branch is due to
open at at the start of the 2011 season.

Glasgow
An exhibition, commencing Saturday 13th November and running for two
months, entiled 'Glasgow Electric 50' is being held at Glasgow Kelvingrove
Art Gallery.  It marks the development of the city's suburban electric
services from the introduction of the iconic Blue Trains through to the
reopening of the Airdie-Bathgate line.

Bulgaria
The Rila Railways National Association, which was set up in 2002, has
resumed its activity after a three-year break.  The main objective of the
association is to restore the railway line from the south-western town of
Kocherinovo to the Rila Monastery, a key tourist destination.  The 600-mm
gauge railway was built in stages and reached the Rila Monastery in 1924.
It was initially used to transport logs from the forest to the factory in
the village of Barakovo.

Israel
Israel has plans for an east-west railway from Rosh Ha'ayin in Israel via
Ariel to Nablus in the West Bank, and between Ramallah in the West Bank
and Latroun in Israel.  Lines will also be constructed between Jenin in
the West Bank and Beersheba in southern Israel and the Gaza Strip and Yad
Mordechai in southern Israel.

Iran
China has signed an agreement to build a new line that will run from
Tehran to the town of Khosravi on the border with Iraq (around 360 miles
as the crow flies) passing through Arak, Hamedan and Kermanshah.
Eventually the route could link Iran with Iraq and even Syria as part of a
Middle-Eastern corridor benefiting also the 5,000 Iranians who make
pilgrimages each day to the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala in Iraq.

Russia
On 30th July Russian Railways started operation of its 'Sapsan' (pergerine
falcon) high speed train between Nizhny Novgorod (the country's fourth
largest city) and St Petersburg via Moscow.  The line has been modernised
between Nizhny Novgorod and Moscow to permit higher speeds by the Sapsan.
Three Sapsan train pairs now operate daily between St Petersburg and
Moscow with one continuing to Nizhny Novgorod.  Traditional daytime trains
between Moscow and St Petersburg have been withdrawn although night
services remain unchanged.

India
South Central Railways will start work soon on a new 258.3km line from YSR
district (formerly Kadapa) to Karnataka capital Bangalore, cutting the
distance by 181km.  The new line will pass through Kadapa and Chittoor
districts of Andhra Pradesh and Kolar district of Karnataka joing the
Pakala-Dharmavaram line at Madanapalle.

Indonesia
Final preparations for construction in East Kalimantan, Sumatra, of a
US$1bn 130km line are underway.  This first private railway in Indonesia
will link the Muara Wahau coal mine in East Kutai with the coast where
$250 million is being spent on a new seaport terminal. Tender preparations
are also underway for another 185km line in Central Kalimantan, also
designed to facilitate an efficient haulage of coal from mines to seaport
terminals. In addition the South Sumatra's state-owned coal company PT
Bukit Asam and PT Adani Global signed an agreement to build a 270km line
to expedite the haulage of coal from Bukit Asam's coal mine to a coal
terminal at Tanjung Api-Api port.

South Korea
The government has announced a plan to expand and revamp the railway
network to connect major cities so that it will be possible to reach any
place in the country within two hours.  It hopes to complete a high-speed
line linking Daegu and Busan by November 2010 and another crossing through
South Jeolla Province between 2014 and 2017, while refurbishing existing
lines to accommodate trains that can travel up to 230km/h.
